We are getting a lot of Polish migrant labour in Kent for the apple picking season - work that many local people deem below their station. The Polish pay an agency in Poland £500 for a placement picking apples, air fares and board and lodging. A work trip. Except it isn't. The arrive at a farm with no apples, expected to live in a caravan full of shit, literally, and with open air cooking facilities. The accomodation is SHITE. They are then told they will pick the last crop of the strawberries - the crop no one else will pick because it is back breaking and yields little fruit and, in return, little cash. When the Polish complain they are kicked off the farms and left to fend for themselves in the middle or rural Kent and with no cash. That is how a group of five men found their way to a friend's dad's B&B. They had walked miles into Canterbury and saw his B&B sign. They offered to do menial jobs for a night's stay so they could sort themselves out. My friend's dad - an Irish migrant - was so enraged he has let them stay until their return ticket is due and helped them find work. These people are not scum spongers. They are carpenters, mechanics and nurses and over here on what seemed legitimate work with a determined time period. Except they are victims of the EU widening, just as the right wing feel they are. Britain is full to the brim with EU migrants. They have taken our places for GP surgeries, and now our Catholic schools are turning away British children in favour of our Polish and other EU next door neighbours. Time for radical action. Labour Government must stop the influx until the birth rate calms down. We pay tax and have to pay for a private nursery education, but these immigrants get treated with free places for their offspring and leave our communities without a school to go to. London Borough of Richmond has a big problem with admissions to primary schools for 2007/8. My child has lost out to these immigrants from the EU and we pay council tax and cannot even get her into one school and turned away from many others. It has got out of hand. Charity begins at home not POLAND, MOLDOVA, CZECH REP, LITHUANIA, SLOVAKIA, ROMAINIA, and the world by all accounts. So the rest of you think we should help the world.
